Action Sounding is an immersive sound art performance reimagining principles of Action Painting through sound, movement, and materiality, inspired by Modest Cuixart’s works from 1956 to 1964.

Cuixart’s exploration of matter—via collage, layering, scratching, and burning—serves as the performance’s foundation, extending into auditory and physical realms. The performers use their bodies as dynamic tools,
interacting with space and materials, creating and evolving compositions. Sound is a malleable substance, manipulated in real-time mirroring textures and rhythms of Cuixart’s paintings, 12:1 surround-sound to envelop the audience in an auditory landscape.
The performance highlights the act of leaving traces, as patterns emerge and dissolve in cycles of creation and destruction, configuration and reconfiguration.

Blurring the boundaries between painting, sculpture, sound, and movement, Action Sounding invites the audience to experience the raw qualities of creativity, and to reflect on the interconnectedness of disciplines and the transformative power of matter. This multisensory experience offers fresh perspectives on the expressive potential of Action Painting and its ability to transcend formal boundaries.
